First things first

Indecisiveness is a scary thing, especially when it comes to choosing the thing you'll have to do for the rest of your life or until you retire. I'm talking, of course, about choosing a field of study and then a career that might result from that education. It seems like a perpetual question from the moment we can speak up until you actually have to pick something. Some people, the lucky ones, know right away and it never changes, they feel comfortable and satisfied with that choice. Others have more trouble actually making a decision and go along with the flow until they realize that they aren't really even floating anymore, they've reached the shore. I'll let you guess which of the two I am.

All my life I have loved art. By working in the field of cinema, I can continue doing something I love while being paid. Art has always been one of my biggest passions and movies have always given a door to my imagination, they are a place where my mind can run wild and free and where I don't have to worry about the consequences.

I find the idea of always working on projects that create a finished product very exciting. You never know exactly what you are going to end up with and that creates a sort of anticipation that only encourages you to keep working harder and harder until you have your finished product, something you worked hard on and can be very proud of.

I find the process that goes from having an idea to turning that idea into a movie absolutely inspiring. It never ceases to baffle me that something that just one person thought of in their head can be put to work and become a movie. At the end of the day, everything we see everywhere is the product of an idea, of a thought and that, in and of itself, is incredibly inspiring.

I know what you’re thinking; why is this girl studying Science if she wants to work in the film industry? It’s a completely valid question. The truth is that I’m torn between art and science. At school, I’ve always studied science so that seemed like the logical choice for college but really, I’m having doubts. I find science incredibly interesting but I have never known anything else and I can’t seem to shake the feeling that I should be doing something other than that, something different.

The fun thing about cinema is the variety of things that you can do if you actually work in the field. I, for example, have no interest in acting. I prefer working behind the camera, planning shots, mapping out scenes and editing videos and sounds. I believe there is something for everyone in this field and so perhaps, I might find my place there.

  5. Sorry for deleting my previous comment. I noticed a typo!

Magnificent blog post, Laurence! I loved every bit of it. I find it quite reflective of the wonderful young woman you are.

I can relate to the feeling that you are experiencing right now. I was also torn between continuing in a field that I loved (animal health) or pursuing in a field which would enable me to exploit my need to help others and making them see the best in themselves. Obviously, I chose animal health, and am now training young pups new tricks in the English classroom. I'M JUST KIDDING! I don't regret my choice one bit and have found a way to stay connected with my love for animals by being a foster family for Chiots Nordiques.

I truly hope that you will find your calling and thrive in a field that you adore. It might take a bit more time than others (take me, for examples), but you will get there eventually. I'm sure of it!

  7. Laurence! Your intro! It is amazing! I hope you can feel my true admiration with my use of not one, but three exclamation points. :) For my part, I am one of those people that had known their entire life what they want to do in the future. You have the right to be jealous here hihi. I truly appreciate you talking about cinema even if you are in natural sciences. It is like a breath of fresh air to see someone considering something so different from what they are thought at school. You better invite me to the premieres of your movies when you are famous!

  8. Hello Laurence! Your post is incredibly inspiring, it is brave of you to admit having doubts about your school path. If I could suggest one thing, it would be to justify your text. Other than that, your article is very well-made. You seem passionate about this field, which is great. Also, I was wondering if you had a certain type of movie that you would like to work on later?
